#goals

When I googled ‘#goals’ at 3:27PM today, it had 79.6 million posts on Instagram alone. So, pretty fair to say that goals are something very prominent in our culture, especially with millennials.

Well, it just so happens that my husband and I apparently classify as part of the millennial generation, which is also coined as ‘Gen Y’. (Which much cooler and doesn’t have all the negative stigma of ‘millennial’.) Therefore, makes total since that a week into marriage two years ago, my husband shared his desire for us to have an annual goal setting meeting. I (reluctantly) obliged, and that first year our goals were scattered, many, and stayed tucked away in our dresser.

We recently wrapped up our third goal setting meeting (on our anniversary) where we discussed growth observed as well as areas we hoped to see continued growth in. Each year we have tweaked how we display, pursue, and assess our goals. For example, this year our goals were written on one page and hung in our bedroom above our dresser; four family goals to pursue together, three individual goals to pursue separately.

Our annual goal setting is now one of my favorite things that we do as a couple, and I am far from reluctant in participation as I was that first year. The ‘setting’ may be only one day, but the activity is a year long commitment between the two of us to be present, intentional, and accountable to how we are living. And although they do benefit us as they guide us in growing individually and in oneness, the greatest benefit of our annual goals isn’t about my husband or I at all. The greatest benefit is that through refinement and growth, our goals have evolved into a carefully selected list that aspire us to live and serve others with the intent of bringing glory to Him.
